  1. An eclipse is a passage of an astronomical
  2. body through the shadow of another. 
  3. The term is usually employed for solar and 
  4. lunar eclipses, which may be either partial
  5. or total. A solar eclipse occurs when the
  6. Moon passes in front of the Sun as seen from
  7. Earth, and can happen only at new Moon.
  8. During a total eclipse the Sun's corona can
  9. be seen. A total solar eclipse can last up to
  10. 7½ minutes. When the Moon is at its farthest
  11. from Earth it does not completely cover the
  12. face of the Sun, leaving a ring of sunlight
  13. visible. This is an annular eclipse. Between
  14. two and five solar eclipses occur each year. 
  15. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes
  16. into the shadow of the Earth, becoming dim
  17. until emerging from the shadow. 
  18. Lunar eclipses may be partial or total, and
  19. they can happen only at full Moon. Total
  20. lunar eclipses last for up to 100 minutes,
  21. the maximum number of Total lunar eclipses 
  22. each year is three.
